Tokyo stocks closed lower Wednesday with the key Nikkei index down 1.04 percent.
The benchmark Nikkei 225 Average shed 98.81 points to 9,439.13, hitting a fresh closing low since Nov. 30 when it finished at 9, 345.55. The broader Topix index was down 7.96 points, or 0.93 percent, at 850.37.
Trading volume on the main section expanded to 2,040.05 million shares from 1,805.01 million Tuesday.
On the First Section, declining shares beat advancing ones 1, 063 to 493.
