Shipping lines were also among notable gainers Thursday following Mizuho Securities raising their investment ratings on the industry, citing improved market conditions leading to rising profits.
Nippon Yusen rose 4.7 percent to 336 yen and Mitsui O.S.K. Lines rose 4 percent to 655 yen. Kawasaki Kisen gained 5.7 percent to close at 365 yen.
Some 1.96 billion shares changed hands on the Tokyo exchange's First section, down from Wednesday's volume of 2.22 billion shares.
Advancing issues outnumbered declining ones by 1,456 to 138.
