Singapore's retail sales declined by 11.8 percent in September 2009 compared to the same period a year ago, figures released by the Singapore Department ofStatistics showed on Friday.

Turnover of motor vehicles posted the steepest decline of 36.3 percent over a year ago, the SDS said. Sales at petrol services stations also dropped by 11.9 percent due partially to lower prices. After adjusting for price changes, petrol sales declined by 5.6 percent over a year ago.

Similarly, sales of optical goods and books, telecommunication apparatus & computers, and furniture & household equipment decreased between 3.1 percent and 4.7 percent over September 2008.

On a month-on-month seasonally adjusted basis, retail sales decreased by 7.9 percent in September compared to August, due mainly to lower sales of motor vehicles.
