The Asia-Europe Meeting (ASEM) has been working to promote the overall Asia-Europe relations on international and inter-regional issues of common interest, said an official with the European Commission (EC) in Kuala Lumpur Monday.

Vincent Piket, head of the EC delegation to Malaysia, made the remarks at a seminar in the framework of the ASEM to discuss a new Asia economic model beyond the global crisis.

Piket said that dialogue in ASEM was a valuable complement to the bilateral relations between the Asian countries and the EU, thanks to its open and inclusive character and the diversity among its shareholders.

Meanwhile, he said the cooperation between Asia and Europe was of immense relevance in the economic reality of today.

The global economy has radically changed since the last ASEM conference in June 2008 in the Republic of Korea, with its first contraction seen in 50 years and the steepest fall recorded in world trade, he said.

He praised ASEM's efforts on promoting dialogue between the two regions on economic multilateralism, trade and investment, and financial and fiscal sector, as well as cooperation on crisis management.

He noted that the seminar would provide input to the ASEM economic process, which was regarded as the preparation of the ASEM Finance Ministers' meeting in Spain on April 16-17 next year.

ASEM has been an inter-governmental platform of dialogue and cooperation between Asia and Europe since 1996. It currently has 45 members, which together represent half of the world's gross domestic product.

The two-day seminar, which began here on Monday, is co-organized by the Asian Development Bank, the Central Bank of Malaysia and the European Commission, with participation of more than 100 officials and economists from both Asia and Europe.
