Japan's cell-phone shipments plummeted 30.1 percent year-on-year in fiscal 2008 to 34.64 million units as the ongoing financial crisis took a heavy toll on the world's second largest economy, the Japan Electronics and Information Technology Industries Association (JEITA) said Wednesday.

JEITA said that it is the steepest fall in cell-phone shipments since the industry body began record relevant data in fiscal 1992.

JEITA attributed the decline to the reduced consumption of cell-phone users, who hesitate to replace their old handsets with new ones.

Cell-phone shipments briefly shank to 44 million units in fiscal 2004 following the previous year's hike but regained ground in fiscal 2005 and continued to be on the increase until fiscal 2008.
