Maersk CEO discusses company's record 5 billion dollar profit (4)

The company is predicting a lower result in 2011, with its Annual Report 2010 stating that container activities "expect a satisfactory result, but below the 2010 result."

"We have never made more than 5 billion U.S. dollars [profit] before, and therefore we do believe it would be hard to make it again," Andersen said.

Yet, Maersk is predicting a 6 to 8 percent rise in global demand for seaborne containers this year, with especial growth in freight volumes on the Asia-Europe trade routes.

"The Group expects the global demand for seaborne containers to grow by 6 to 8 percent in 2011," the 2010 annual report says. "The global supply of new tonnage is expected to match or grow more than the freight volume especially on the Asia to Europe trade."
