Greek Prime Minister George Papandreou on Friday spoke highly of a Chinese shipping company's investment in his country, saying the company's investment could boost Greece's economic development.

Papandreou made the remarks on Friday during his meeting with Wei Jiafu, president and CEO of China Ocean Shipping (Group) Company (COSCO), a leading Chinese shipping giant.

During the meeting, Wei introduced the current development of his company's container project at the Greek port of Piraeus.

Papandreou said COSCO's increasing investment into the sea route linking Piraeus was conducive to the development of the Greek port and the region as a whole.

The Greek prime minister said he was supporting the cooperation between COSCO and its Greek counterparts, which would further enhance cooperation between the two countries' enterprises.

Papandreou said he was also looking forward to more cooperation of the two sides in tourism, infrastructure and maritime education.

Commenting on the current debt crisis, Papandreou said his government was determined to deal with the issue, which he said was also an opportunity for the country to make positive changes in economy, politics and society.

Greek President Karolos Papoulias on Wednesday met with Wei, who was on a five-day visit to Greece starting on May 18.
