The future positions of the BRIC and other emerging economies are sure to rise, said Jin Canrong, associate dean of the School of International Studies, RUC, adding that it will take a very long time for them to start playing a leading role in the global stage.

Currently, world politics and economy are still dominated by the western industrialized economies. Emerging countries are either non-western countries or marginal countries in the western world.

The four BRIC countries are ambitious, but given their different civilization backgrounds, diplomatic philosophies and geopolitical interests, they may only develop into a policy coordinating forum in which they can form a common strategy in negotiation with western powers rather than a country bloc.

The BRIC is now a functional organization and focuses on the changes in world political and economic structure. At the beginning of their cooperation and coordination, lack of experience and the diversity between them may be a problem, but the future positions of the BRICs and other emerging economies may rise.

Xiao Geng, director of the Brookings-Tsinghua Center, noted that once these developing countries finish industrialization and the income and life standards of their people rise, the world may change significantly – their large population and territories will decide their proportion in the world economy.

The BRIC countries have many internal conflicts, but it is still a useful organization which can help push forward cooperation involving more countries. "Global cooperation is the ultimate target," said Xiao.
