MOFCOM: raw materials export policy in line with WTO rules

WTO case against China gathers steam

The European Union expressed its willingness to "find an amicable solution" to its trade dispute with China on China’s raw material export tariffs, but warned at the same time that further action against more Chinese products is possible.

An amicable solution "remains the prime objective of the EC", said Brussels in a statement on June 23 after it brought the case with Washington to WTO.

The EU and the US accused China of giving unfair advantages to Chinese industries by imposing restrictive measures on exports of some raw materials like bauxite, coke, fluorspar, silicon carbide and zinc, yellow phosphorous, coke, etc.

The products concerned are used by the steel, aluminium and chemical industries, said the EU in the statement, adding that the industries in the EU that is potentially affected represents about 4 percent of EU industrial activity and around 500,000 jobs.

The products and measures involved in the consultation are just "the first batch" and the EU may take actions on more, said the statement.
