"China Unicom will start 3G commercial use in 285 cities across China from September 28, 2009,"said He Huajie, deputy general manager for China Unicom's product center. His statement marks the strat of China's three telecom operators' 3G campaign. An insider from China Unicom said that the company would subsidize all its WCDMA phones.
Mobile phone market is a hot spot in the 3G campaign. China Mobile and China Telecom have already cooperated with phone makers so as to provide more TD-SCDMA and CDMA2000 phones to customers. China Unicom's strategy has also aroused people's interest after it introduced iPhone to China.
Yu Yingtao, general manager of Vsens, a Unicom subsidiary, noted that the company would unveil several 3G phones with the start of WCDMA commercial use. He said that the introduction of iPhone was only part of China Unicom's strategy. The company would work to provide more 3G phones and make adjustments to its marketing channels.
Chang Xiaobing, China Unicom Chairman and Chief Executive, has noted that Unicom will offer a subsidy to customers to lower the iPhone's price on August 28. iPhone would not be the only mobile device to receive subsidy, said an insider.
