Chinese equities continued the upward trend of the previous trading day and closed higher at midday Wednesday, with the benchmark Shanghai Composite Index gaining 0.54 percent, or 14.45points, to 2,698.18 points.

 The Shenzhen Component Index closed at 10,686.94 points, up 0.68 percent, or 72.65 points.

Sinopec, China's leading oil refiner, lost 0.71 percent to 11.23 yuan (1.64 U.S. dollars) per share, with PetroChina edging up 0.31 percent to 12.9 yuan per share.

China's National Development and Reform Commission, the country's top economic planning agency, announced Tuesday that the prices of gasoline and diesel would be raised by 300 yuan a tonne each, or about 4 percent, starting from Sept. 2.
