On August 5, 2009, Xu Luode, president of Chinese mainland's UnionPay, arrived in Taiwan for a visit. China mainland's Unionpay and Taiwan's Credit Card Center will jointly launch a Unionpay card service in Taiwan.
At an historic meeting between the mainland's Association for Relations Across the Taiwan Straits (ARATS) and Taiwan's Straits Exchange Foundation (SEF) one year ago, Taiwan agreed to open to mainland tourists. However, mainland tourists' consumption in Taiwan is restricted by daily cash quotas.
The service will officially start on August 7. Mainland travelers can use UnionPay cards in Taiwan as of that date.
