China is accelerating wind power construction and is currently building eight 10-million-kilowatt wind power bases in seven provinces, said Shi Pengfei, vice president of the Chinese Wind Energy Association (CWEA).

These eight bases are located in regions with rich wind energy resources, including Jiuquan in Gansu Province, Hami in Xinjiang, Hebei Province, Jilin Province, eastern Inner Mongolia, western Inner Mongolia as well as Jiangsu and Shandong provinces.

Shi noted that the planning and construction of the 10-million-kilowatt wind power bases will ensure the total output of electricity produced by China's wind power reaches 100 million kilowatts by 2020 as well as help realize the goals proposed in the "Medium and Long-term Development Plan for Renewable Energy."

According to sources, the first phase of the first 10-million-kilowatt wind power base in Jiuquan, Gansu Province has been completed, and the construction of the second phase has been launched. Currently, related parties are solving the problem of power transmission to the North China Grid Company.

China aims to realize 100 million kilowatt of wind power installed capacity by 2020. But experts estimate that the total installed capacity is expected to reach 150 million to 300 million kilowatts in 2020, and the average annual increment in the next 10 years is expected to reach about 11 to 26 gigawatts. The main restraining factor of the growth of wind power installed capacity is the construction of supporting power grids.

China's total installed capacity of wind power reached more than 41.8 gigawatts in 2010, ranking first worldwide. Between 2003 and 2009, the growth rate of annual new wind power installed capacity stood at more than 100 percent, except for 2008 under the influence of the financial crisis.
