After a long three-and-a-half years, AT&T's monopoly on iPhone service plans will come to an end. Verizon Wireless, the top US wireless operator, will begin selling iPhone to its customers, starting February 10th.

Lowell McAdam, President and Chief Operating Officer of Verizon Wireless said "Early next month the iPhone 4 will be part of the great Verizon Wireless portfolio of products."

Verizon President and COO Lowell McAdam made it official at a New York City Press conference on Tuesday.

Verizon will offer the iPhone to consumers - taking away AT&T's exclusivity.

The project was two years in the making and expectations are high.

John Stratton, Chief Operating Officer of Verizon Wireless said "We know the demand is out there. We have seen just in the last couple of hours since the announcement a huge surge in traffic on our websites, Apple is seeing the same on their's so our expectations are that this is going to be an epic launch for both companies."

The key advantage for Verizon in the new two-way battle- its network. Consumer Reports Paul Reynolds:

Paul Reynolds, Electronics Editor of Consumer Reports said "In our surveys' of our customers, with their experiences with cellphone service, Verizon has done very well and has typically been at the top of our ratings or tied for being at the top. AT&T on the other hand in our latest survey is clearly the worst cell phone carrier in America."

Handset prices will be comparable with AT&T.

But unlike when the original iPhone made its debut in 2007, the Verizon iPhone faces a crowded field of smartphones- including popular Android models.

Other possible drawbacks: No new iPhone. Verizon is debuting with the version already on the market. And the service will not run on its newer, faster 4G LTE network. But there is something new for consumers.Ross Rubin of NPD Group:

Ross Rubin, Industry Analysis of Consumer Technology, NPD Group said "There is at least one new feature which is a personal hot spot feature which allows the Verizon iPhone to support up to 5 other devices and act as a mobile hot spot."
