Myanmar stresses development of film, video industry

Myanmar Minister of Information U Kyaw Hsan has stressed the need for film and video producers to closely cooperate with the government's censor board to work for the development of the film and video industry, the official daily New Light of Myanmar reported Sunday.

Kyaw Hsan made the remarks at a ceremony in Yangon on Saturday marking the 40th anniversary of the Myanmar Motion Picture Enterprise under the ministry.

He appraised the brilliant performances made by the two parties in improving the industry and preserving Myanmar cultural heritage.

He noted that the government and the ministry are rendering necessary assistance to producers to create better works of motion picture and video for public entertainment and broadening their horizons.

Pointing out the pirate CDs are impediment to improvement to film and video industry, he also emphasized the need to make concerted efforts in combating production of pirate CDs under law by applying modern technology.

He urged workers engaged in the industry to efficiently use the modern film equipment provide by the state for promotion of Myanmar motion picture standard and keep in touch with ever- developing technology.

In February this year, the minister, at an annual ceremony in Nay Pyi Taw to present film academy awards to successful artists in the country, had called for stepping up efforts for producing quality movies in order to penetrate the international film markets.

On the occasion, seven motion picture academy awards for 2008 were presented to winning artists out of 12 movies produced during the year.

Since 1952, Myanmar has presented a total of 319 domestic academy awards to successful artists in the country up to now.
