The United Nations' food agency is holding a series of workshops here for South American trainees to learn agricultural know-how, especially efficient utilization of resources.

Jose Graziano da Silva, regional representative for UN's Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO), told reporters that the training program, which drew members of nine social organizations from Argentina, Bolivia, Chile, Paraguay and Uruguay, was aimed at helping rural communities deal with multiple challenges.

He also called for South American governments to orient public policies toward bolstering growth potential of rural areas.
