The UN Security Council on Tuesday lauded the Haitian people for the peaceful conduct of the presidential and legislative elections and welcomed the inauguration of a new government.

In a press statement, the 15-member Council encouraged "all political actors in Haiti to resolve any remaining electoral disputes through transparent and efficient legal means in order to ensure that the results reflect the will of the Haitian people."

The Council also expressed deep appreciation for the efforts of the UN Stabilization Mission in Haiti (MINUSTAH), which provided logistical and security support to the Haitian authorities throughout the electoral process.

After a pivotal presidential runoff last month, popular singer Michel Martelly was elected president of Haiti with 67.57 percent of the vote, the Haitian Provisional Electoral Council announced in April.

Martelly was sworn in as president on May 14 and has promised to accelerate reconstruction from last year's devastating earthquake that left about 250,000 people dead and over 1.6 million homeless.

"The members of the Security Council encourage Haiti's new leaders to remain focused on the critical tasks of rebuilding the country, ensuring respect for the rule of law, and ensuring a future of peace, stability and prosperity for all Haitians," noted the statement.
