NATO Secretary General Anders Fogh Rasmussen on Saturday condemned Libyan leader Muammar Gaddafi 's "threat" of war with NATO member state Italy.

"I strongly condemn the statement attributed to Colonel Gaddafi threatening Italy. I reject any threat against Italy or any other ally. NATO allies and partners will stand together," he said in a statement.

"NATO remains firm - we will continue our operation until the threat to the civilian population of Libya is removed," it concluded.

Gaddafi on Saturday called for war with Italy, which was the former colonial power in Libya.

"We are already in a war with Italy since Italians kill our children in 2011 as they did in 1911, that is why I cannot forbid Libyans to defend their lives and carry the military actions on the enemy's territory," Gaddafi said.

Italy is one of 14 NATO members that contribute troops to the alliance's military operation in Libya.

On April 25, Italy said it would expand its role in the operation by authorizing airstrikes on Gaddafi's ground forces.
