UN Secretary-general Ban Ki- moon on Friday noted the resignation of Hosni Mubarak as the Egyptian president, and he is expected to issue a statement on the Middle East country, Ban's spokesman Martin Nesirky told reporters here.

Ban's statement is expected soon, the spokesman said at a daily news briefing.

Mubarak stepped down as the Egyptian military took charge of the country, Egyptian Vice President Omar Suleiman said earlier on Friday.

Mubarak's resignation came only one day after he announced that he was handing over power to the vice president without stepping down on Thursday night.

In a statement issued by Nesirky on Thursday night, Ban reiterated his call for "a transparent, orderly and peaceful transition" in Egypt that includes free and fair elections, saying that it is for the people of that country to determine their future.
