Three people were killed at a camp for internally displaced persons (IDPs) in west Darfur of Sudan on Wednesday during a clash between rebel groups, UN spokesperson Martin Nesirky told reporters in the United Nations Thursday.

Nesirky said that the United Nations and African Union Mission in Darfur (UNAMID) has relayed information concerning the deaths of three individuals "close" to the Liberation and Justice Movement (LJM).

LJM is a rebel movement in Darfur that recently signed a cease- fire with the Sudanese government in an effort to quell the conflict that has been raging in Darfur since 2003.

The three casualties came during a gun battle at the Hamadiya IDP camp between supporters of LJM and supporters of the Sudan Liberation Army-Abdul Wahid (SLA-AW), a faction of another rebel movement opposed to peace negotiations with the government. Houses belonging to LJM supporters were also burned to the ground.

The Sudanese police have arrested four suspects in the killings, and Nesirky said that UNAMID is joining them in "investigating the incident and closely monitoring the aftermath."

Humanitarian assistance at Hamadilya has been suspended temporarily in light of the recent fighting, Nesirky added.
