The seventh informal meeting of the Chief of Defense Forces of the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) opened in Vietnam's capital city of Hanoi on Thursday.

Under the theme "Efficiency enhancement of cooperation among armies of ASEAN countries in response to non-traditional security threats", the meeting drew chiefs of defense forces from ten ASEAN countries.

Speaking at the meeting, Chief of General Staff of the Vietnamese People's Army Nguyen Khac Nghien said that the Southeast Asian region is facing with non-traditional, trans- national security threats including terrorism, food and energy security, natural disasters, and climate change.

These threats require the tight cooperation and coordination of many countries in the region, said Nghien. The cooperation between ASEAN armies plays important role in solving challenges and ensure the regional peace, security and stability.

Nghien said that to improve the effectiveness of army cooperation, the ASEAN countries should enhance the information and experiences exchanges and continue dialogues on confidence building.
