UN Secretary-general Ban Ki-moon on Tuesday extended his condolences on the passing of General Lansana Conte of Guinea, and stressed the need for a peaceful, democratic and constitutional transfer of power, following a reported coup attempt in the West African nation just hours after the president's death on Monday.

"He calls for calm and urges the armed forces and all stakeholders to respect the democratic process," Ban's spokesperson said in a statement on behalf of the UN chief.

"At this time of transition in Guinea, the secretary-general stresses the need for a peaceful and democratic transfer of power, in accordance with the Constitution," the statement said.

The statement also acknowledged President Conte's "long-standing commitment to the maintenance of peace and unity in Guinea and to the promotion of stability and regional cooperation in the Mano River Basin."

In particular, Ban commended Guinea's generosity in hosting hundreds of thousands of refugees fleeing conflict in neighboring countries, the statement added.
