The European Union signed Thursday a joint declaration on a mobility partnership with Cape Verde in Luxembourg to better manage migration flows.

The Mobility Partnership with Cape Verde has wide-ranging objectives, including facilitating legal immigration and fighting against illegal immigration while promoting capacity building, said a news release from the EU Council.

"Better managing migration while reinforcing institutional capacity in Cape Verde are common goals to which these dynamic instruments can make an important contribution," it said. It is one of the very first Mobility Partnerships the EU established with neighboring nations.

The agreement represents another step toward closer cooperation in line with the special partnership established in 2007 between the EU and Cape Verde within the framework of the Cotonou Agreement, the news release said.
