Two people were killed and others were wounded in a fire in a Tunisian prison, state news agency TAP reported Tuesday.

The fire erupted when inmates set mattresses ablaze as they were trying to escape from the civil Kasserine prison, TAP quoted an official as saying.

The official added the two died of asphyxiation due to smoke inhalation.

The TAP said troops have been deployed outside the prison as relatives of inmates were protesting for the release of the prisoners.

The protesters stoned troops when they stopped them from storming the prison.
