A series of explosions hit el- Fornag in the east of Libyan capital Tripoli on Friday, an area which has been bombed by NATO warplanes, a Xinhua correspondent said.

The explosions sent a thick cloud of black smoke rising high into the air and there were no reports about casualties.

This came as Libya's state television reported NATO carried out air attacks in Tripoli's Ain Zara district.

NATO, which commands the military interference in Libyan since March, has been ratcheting up military pressure on the regime of embattled Libyan leader Muammar Gaddafi.
