Thousands of Israelis are supporting cottage cheese boycott through two different Facebook groups that ask to stop the consumption until prices drop.

Cottage cheese can be found almost in every Israeli household and is considered a basic food product, along with other products that have also seen a price rise.

With around 35,000 followers, both groups call on consumers to refrain from buying these dairy products, the prices of which are "50 percent higher than the European and U.S. market," Yitzhak Alrov, the boycott organizer, told Yediot Aharonoth newspaper on Wednesday.

Consumers complain that the price of one carton of cottage cheese has doubled in recent years, to almost 3.5 U.S. dollars now and is almost equivalent to one liter of fuel.

Last year the Israeli government removed the regulation on prices for dairy products, making Israelis fear that they will rise without control. The group organizers threatened to continue boycotting other similar products until they can get a reaction from the manufacturers.

"Maybe this way we will manage to reduce the prices and reach some level of sanity," Alrov said, "here everything just rises, they are a real cartel."
