South Kordofan State on the border between north and south Sudan is likely to be a new point of tension between the two sides at a time when south Sudan would officially declare independent on July 9.

The area witnessed armed clashes during the past two days that resulted in killing of a Sudanese soldier and injury of many others from both sides in the newest wave of violence that may further complicate the relations between north and south Sudan.

The UN earlier said fire shots were reported in Kadogli late Monday, without giving further details.

The Sudanese Armed Forces (SAF), meanwhile, said in a statement posted on the website of Sudanese Ministry of Defense that a northern Sudanese soldier was killed and seven others were injured in military clashes on Sunday at Um Dorain village, some 48 kms east of Kadogli, capital of South Kordofan State.

The SAF, in its statement, accused the Sudan People's Liberation Army (SPLA) of attacking Um Dorain village.
