The search for bodies from a Libyan trawler that capsized off the Kerkennah islands some 30 km from Tunisia's mainland has been delayed due to the bad weather, the official TAP press agency reported on Saturday.

In one of the worst illegal immigration accidents in the Mediterranean, between 200 and 270 people are reported missing and 577 passengers were rescued on Wednesday after the trawler got stuck in shallow water off Tunisia as it was heading for the Italian island of Lampedusa.

The head of the Sfax maritime district Tahar Landolsi said that so far only two bodies had been recovered, adding that rescue operations will resume as soon as the weather improves on Saturday night or in the early hours of Sunday, TAP reported.

The Libyan trawler was carrying over 800 migrants fleeing the violence in Libya to Italy. Most of the migrants are reported to be from sub-Saharan Africa and Asia.
