At least five soldiers were killed and dozens of others were injured on Monday in an ambush by al-Qaida militants which targeted a military patrol in Yemen's southern province of Abyan, a local security official said.

A convoy of reinforcements from Aden province was ambushed by al-Qaida militants in Zunjibar city, capital of Abyan, the official said on condition of anonymity.

Dozens of al-Qaida militants were killed during fierce confrontations with the army forces in Zunjibar city, he said.

The army forces have been shelling Zunjibar downtown since Monday morning and a number of naval vessels stationed at the coast of the city were involved in that shelling, he added.

Local residents told Xinhua that some shells seriously damaged their houses.

Hundreds of al-Qaida militants took control of Yemen's southern city of Zunjibar a few days ago and are still fighting the army forces and tribal leaders who are trying to regain control of the city.

Elsewhere, eight soldiers were killed in Yemen's southern province of Hadramout Sunday night when a group of suspected al- Qaida militants attacked a checkpoint in Ghail Bawazir city, according to local security officials.
