The UN Security Council (UNSC) is set to send a mission to Kenya on Wednesday to deal with regional peace and security issues in neighboring Somalia.

A statement from the Nairobi-based UN Political Office for Somalia (UNPOS) said the representatives of the UNSC will arrive in Nairobi on Wednesday after such visits to Ethiopia and Sudan.

The delegation first arrived in Addis Ababa on Friday headed by Ambassador Gerard Araud of France. The mission then traveled onward to Sudan, where they congratulated the Comprehensive Peace Agreement (CPA) parties and the people of Sudan for a peaceful and successful referendum.

The 15-member body in its first stop in Addis Ababa had broad consultations with the AU's Peace and Security Council on developments and ongoing efforts to ensure peace and stability in the volatile region. "The last stop will be Nairobi, capital of Kenya, where the council mission will discuss broad issues relating to Somalia. It is envisaged that the mission will meet with senior Kenyan government officials," said the UN statement issued recently.

The mission will return to New York on May 26.

The UNSC's focus on Somalia comes as the Horn of Africa nation' s government forces and the AU Mission in Somalia (AMISOM) have made considerable gains on rebel positions in recent months, and the meeting will urge the international community to continue funding the mission "without caveats".
