EU diplomatic cheif Ashton visits Libyan opposition's base

The EU high representative of foreign and security policy Catherine Ashton on Sunday expressed the organization's support to the Libyan opposition National Transitional Council (NTC), during her visit to the reble 's base Benghazi.

"I'm here today to explain and to be clear about not only the short-term support from the European Union, but the breadth and depth of our support," Ashton told reporters after a short meeting with the NTC chairman Mustafa Abdul Jalil.

Ashton said the EU will support the Libyan opposition in border management and security reform, economy, health and education system. She added that the EU will also support the civil society.

Jalil told reporters that the opposition will abide by all conventions and international law, saying that they will mobilize all the Libyan people to reconstruct the country.

Ashton visited the city's Liberation Square shortly after the EU delegation's arrival Sunday morning. She will attend a ceremony for the opening of the EU's office in Benghazi in the afternoon and hold a press conference later.
