The United Nations-African Union Mission in Darfur (UNAMID) on Wednesday said the Sudanese forces have launched an air strike at areas in eastern Darfur.

"UNAMID peacekeepers based in Kuma, located approximately 100 km northeast of El Fasher, are currently en route to the nearby village of Sukamir, where an air strike by the government forces was reported yesterday afternoon," the mission said in a statement.

It added that the team will attempt to collect information on possible casualties and newly displaced persons.

"UNAMID flights to the regions of Shangil Tobaya, Fanga Suk and neighboring regions in North Darfur have been suspended until further notice due to government officials citing security concerns. In South Darfur, restrictions on the movement of aid groups have led to the cancellation of a number of humanitarian missions," the statement said.

No comment could so far be attained from the Sudanese Armed Forces (SAF) on the UNAMID statements.

The Sudanese government is planning to conduct a referendum on Darfur's administrative status during coming June when the citizens should decide whether the region should be one region or of many states.
