At least eight people were killed and some others injured in armed attacks launched by a defecting militia from the Sudan People's Liberation Army (SPLA) in the Mayoum county in south Sudan's Unity State.

"The group, which carried out the attacks, belongs to defector Fatwaj Gai. All the victims in the attack are civilians," commissioner of the Mayoum county Charles Machin told Xinhua.

Efforts were underway to rescue the injured people and pursue the attackers, he added.

Unity State witnessed last month violent clashes between the SPLA force and the defecting militia of Peter Gadet, which resulted in the displacement of thousands of civilians.

The Sudan People's Liberation Movement (SPLM) accused Khartoum of arming the defecting militias to destabilize south Sudan, which is preparing to officially declare independence on July 9, while Khartoum refuted the accusations as baseless.

An overwhelming majority of the southerners voted for the separation of south Sudan in a referendum held in January this year according to the Comprehensive Peace Agreement (CPA) inked between north and south Sudan in 2005.
