The police in Nigeria's central Kaduna region are investigating the source of hate telephone messages capable of threatening Saturday's presidential election.

The state's police command said on Tuesday the several messages were designed to cause confusion among the people.

Deputy Commissioner of Police Nwodibo Eke told reporters that the command had commenced investigation to uncover the faceless group.

The message is circulated by an unknown group, calling on the electorate in the state to vote en masse against some candidates due to their religious or ethnic background.

Eke said the hate message was capable of causing disharmony among the people of the state not only during elections, but even after the polls.

"Nigerians and Kaduna people are united and would not look back at messages like this, but all the same, we want to call on them to ignore any message sent to them based on personal interest to cause disharmony," the police chief said.

He advised the public to discountenance the messages and go about their businesses, adding that the police would ensure the security of their lives and property.

The deputy commissioner called on the group to desist from the act or face the wrath of the law if caught.

The state's Security Council earlier held an extra ordinary meeting to appraise the performance of the security agents during last Saturday's National Assembly poll.

Eke, who attended the meeting, said the command was in full swing to ensure hitch-free elections in the state.
