Tunisia and Italy Tuesday signed an agreement on the issue of illegal immigration, the state-run TAP news agency reported on Wednesday.

The agreement provides Italian economic assistance to areas where most of the illegal immigrants originate and providing Tunisia with logistic equipment to enforce maritime control, while, it does not mention the situation of the thousands of Tunisians in Italy.

Italian Interior Minister Roberto Maroni, when talking with his Tunisian counterpart Habib Essid, insisted that the North African country repatriate the immigrants, while the Tunisian side stressed the "impossibility of agreeing to a collective repatriation, especially in light of the situation prevailing in the country," and the need to "respect the immigrants' basic human rights and dignity," according to TAP.
