Some 200 energy officials and water specialists from worldwide Friday called for more financing efforts for developing hydropower as they concluded a two-day meeting here.

They agreed that roles of the public and private sectors should be well defined and utilized to enable financing and investment in hydropower development, according to recommendations made by the meeting dubbed as "the Hydropower for Sustainable Development 2011."

"There is a need for innovation in the structuring of financing including guarantees where appropriate to take into account realities of regional hydropower development which include high capital costs, long development lead times and long operational lives to enabling financing and investment," said a document issued after the conference.

The participants who came from about 30 countries of Africa, Americas, Europe, Asia and Oceania, also agreed that the role of hydropower should be further advanced by catalyzing improvements in water security and management.

Huang Baodong, vice president of China's Sinohydro Group which sponsored the meeting, made a presentation on financing and delivering hydropower schemes in the host country.
