Rebels commanding fighter jets have destroyed two of Libyan leader Muammar Gaddafi's warships off the northeast coast of Ajdabiya, according to opposition news website Libya al-Youm on Tuesday.

The opposition also claimed to have hit a third naval ship in the air strike.

Some army generals and soldiers, particularly in the Libyan Air Force, have defected to join the protesters and have an arsenal of weapons and fighter jets.

Libyan government forces loyal to Gaddafi recaptured the eastern town of Ajdabiya on Tuesday, the Libyan state TV reported.

Inspired by streets-born protests which had swept Tunisia and Egypt and forced their leaders to step down, thousands of Libyans have started a string of protests demanding an end to Gaddafi's 41- year rule.
