The Libyan armed forces will offer an amnesty to defected soldiers if they give up their weapons, Libya's state TV said on Monday.

The armed forces "announce to all deceived soldiers that there will be an amnesty for every soldier who returns showing regret and hands over his weapon," a headline on state TV read.

Libyan leader Muammar Gaddafi continued his attempts to regain control of rebel-held territory in the eastern part of the country, after the Arab League and the US announced their support for a no- fly zone over the North African country.
