Soldiers loyal to Libyan leader Muammar Gaddafi stand guard in Zawiyah, 45 km west of Tripoli, March 11, 2011.

Rebels fighting government forces loyal to Libyan leader Muammar Gaddafi in the eastern town of Ras Lanuf are now three kilometers away from the city, a self- proclaimed spokesman said in statements carried by Al-Arabiya TV.

The spokesman said ongoing battles are only in the outskirts of the city amid reports that Gaddafi's forces now control the town and the oil refinery in Ras Lanuf, 615 kilometers southeast of the capital Tripoli.
