The Nigerian Army has said it is ready to meet security challenges in the country.

Brig. Gen Tukur Buratai, the commander in charge of 2 Brigade, said this in southeast Nigeria's Rivers State on Friday at the closing ceremony of a model exercise on internal security staged by the 29 Battalion of the brigade.

He said the army would work in synergy with other services to meet any security challenges, especially during the general election.

He said the model exercise was a gaming process that sought to evaluate the army's reaction in a simulated setting.

According to him, the training is aimed at developing human capacity to meet probable situations in areas troops may be deployed.

Buratai said the brigade is prepared for the election and other crimes in the area.

"We are fully prepared and this exercise or the training goes beyond the elections," he added.

"Yes, we are prepared and I want to assure you that we are going to stem the issue of kidnapping and armed robbery," he said.

"Although they are essentially police responsibility, but the army too has a responsibility, the internal security and we can always come to the aid of civil authority," the military chief added.

"Yes, we are really prepared, we are really prepared, we have a plan for that," Buratai told his audience.

The commander said the army and other security agencies would continue to meet to work out strategies to meet security challenges in the oil rich Niger Delta area.
