France decided to help send home 5,000 Egyptian refugees fleeing Libya's chaos and blocked at Libyan-Tunisian borders, a French spokesman said Wednesday.

"France has decided to provide air and sea help to evacuate Egyptian worker refugees at the border between Tunisia and Libya," Bernard Valero, the Foreign Ministry spokesman was quotes as saying by Europe 1 radio channel.

"Rotations of wide-body aircraft on the one hand and Navy's transport ship on the other hand are expected to evacuate at least 5,000 people in less than a week," he added.

The United Nations has launched an urgent call to the international community for a massive humanitarian evacuation of tens of thousands of people fleeing Libya currently waiting on the Libyan-Tunisian border.

Chaos erupted on Feb. 16 in the major African oil exporter after protesters took to the streets of Libyan cities to stage anti-government protests.
