Benghazi police chief join anti-Gaddafi protests in Libya

The security chief of the eastern Libyan city of Benghazi announced his resignation and join protests over a heavy-handed security crackdown against protesters in the city.

"I am Brigadier Ali Huwaidi, the director of Benghazi's security popular committee. I tendered my resignation and I am ready to stand behind the youth," he said in a video aired by Al Arabiya TV on Thursday.

He said his decision was in protest against the acts of repression and violence against the protesters.

"Starting from Feb. 16, the situation shocked me through seeing of the use of oppression and cruelty," he said.
