Sri Lankan Foreign Employment Minister Dilan Perera said Thursday that the government measures to evacuate Sri Lankan expat workers in Libya.

"Only the Tripoli airport is operational currently. But people can't travel by road to reach Tripoli", Perera said.

"We have been informed that at least 56 Sri Lankan workers are trying to reach Egypt. We have already sent money to facilitate their return", Perera said.

Some 1,200 Sri Lankans are believed to be working in Libya, who are trapped by the ongoing political unrest there.

Perera said Sri Lanka had agreed with India for Sri Lankans to join the Indian ship which is taking the Indian workers to Malta.
