The Egyptian Supreme Council of Armed Forces spokesman asserted that the army respects the legitimacy demanded by the people during their protests in more than two weeks, in a televised statement on Friday after the president stepped down.

"We present our utmost appreciation for Mubarak who preferred the interest of his people than his own. We expressed thankfulness for all his efforts to serve our nation," he said.

"We realized the seriousness and gravity of the present situation We are keeping on studying all the necessary procedures and steps to achieve people's demands and aspirations," he added.

The spokesman saluted the martyrs who lost their lives in the clashes between the pro-and anti-Mubarak regime.

He said the council will issue a statement of the proposed plans and directives to be taken.

The statement, named as "communique number three," was released after the meeting of the Supreme Council of Egypt's Armed Forces led by Hussein Tantawi, the Commander in Chief of the Armed Forces and Minister of Defense.
