The Egyptian army will intervene if chaos spreads in the country, Egyptian Foreign Minister Ahmed Abul- Gheit said Wednesday in an interview with Al Arabiya TV.

Abul-Gheit called for preserving the constitution in order to protect the country even after its amendments, as the constitutional process will prevent adventurers who try to control the regime in an interim process.

"If the chaos happens, the armed forces will intervene to protect the constitution and Egyptian national security," he said.

Egypt's constitutional committee agreed to amend six articles on Wednesday in its first meeting headed by Siry Siyam, president of the Court of Cassation and the Supreme Judiciary Council.
