An Algerian soldier and a terrorist were killed in an exchange of fire between the army and a militant group in the north of the country, a local daily said Monday.

A gunfight erupted on Saturday evening between army troops and a terrorist group in Ait Chaffa town in Azeffoun directorate, Tizi Ouzou province, leaving a soldier and a terrorist dead and four other troops injured, el-Khabar newspaper said.

The army also recovered a Kalashnikov rifle, said the report.

A report by official APS news agency confirmed the killing of a terrorist in an ambush in Ait Chaffa town on Saturday. Yet, it made no mention of casualties on the army side.

Algerians have faced an increasing threat by Islamist militants since the 1990s. The security forces have recently launched massive military operations against pro-al-Qaida groups, including al-Qaida in Islamic Maghreb (AQIM).
