Guinea's election authority on Tuesday proposed that the country hold the decisive presidential runoff election in mid-August.

According to the Western African country's election law, the runoff should take place on Aug. 15, a spokesman for the Independent National Electoral Commission (CENI) said at a press conference.

However, since that day is the Assumption Day, a holy day to Catholic and Orthodox Christians, the commission thus proposed to hold the polling on Aug. 14, he added.

The two leading candidates, former prime minister Cellou Dalein Diallo and opposition leader Alpha Conde, as well as other related parties, have been informed about the proposal, the spokesman said.

If there is a consensus, then the tentative schedule will then be formalized by an official directive, he added, stressing that the CENI has been prepared for holding the vote on Aug. 14.

Diallo and Conde were leading the race among 24 candidates competing in the first round of the presidential election last month, but neither of them secured over half of the votes.

The election is expected to help stem turbulence and root peace in the country, which has been ruled by a junta since late 2008.
