The International Donors Conference for the Reconstruction of Darfur kicked off in Cario on Sunday with the aim to raise 2 billion U.S. dollars for the reconstruction of the restive area.

The 2 billion dollars will be dedicated to finance a long list of development projects which covers agriculture, animal breeding, housing and urban planning, water supply, health, education and rural development.

The conference will also discuss the establishment of a development bank in Sudan to receive all the grants and aids provided to the war-torn area.

Egypt has initially called for holding the conference after the signing of Abuja Peace Agreement between the Sudanese government and the former rebel Sudan Liberation Movement (SLM) in May 2006.

However, the conference was delayed due to the continuation of war in the region. Egypt renewed the invitation in December 2009.
