Two people were injured Wednesday from an explosion of Algeria's state-run petrochemical company Sonatrach's plant in Skikda, 500 km east of Algiers, state-run APS news agency reported.

The explosion occurred Wednesday afternoon due to hydrogen leak, said the report, adding that the situation has been under control and rescue work was underway.

Oil and natural gas industries are two pillars of the North African country's economy.

Algeria is a member of the Organization of the Petroleum Exporting Countries (OPEC), which pumps about 40 percent oil in the world.
