Eight die in clashes in Mogadishu

About eight people were killed and more than 32 others were wounded Friday in renewed fighting between Somali government forces and Islamist fighters in the Somali capital Mogadishu, witnesses and medical sources said.

The fighting broke out after Islamist fighters attacked Somali government positions and African Union peacekeepers in the north of the city.

Witnessed as well as hospital sources said that eight people were killing as shells slammed in civilian homes around the battle areas.

Local ambulance services in Mogadishu said that 32 people were injured after stray shells and bullets landed in residential areas in the north of the capital Mogadishu.

Both Somali government officials and Islamist commanders have vowed to continue the fighting which entered its third day. Somali officials advised residents in the areas where the fighting was continuing to vacate the areas to avoid harm.

Hundreds of families fled their homes to the outskirts of the coastal city of Mogadishu where hundred of thousands of people lived for the past three years after fleeing the violence in the chaotic city.
